Summer Garden to Vase

A Four-Week Flower Growing and Design Series

Join flower farmer and floral designer Dee Hall Goodwin for four sessions exploring how flowers move from the garden into the vase. Each week combines practical instruction, seasonal materials grown on the farm, and a design project to take home.

By the end of the series, you'll know what to plant, how to harvest, how to care for cut flowers, and how to create arrangements using flowers and botanical materials from your own garden.

No gardening or floral design experience is necessary.

This is a four-week cohort experience. Registration includes all four sessions and is not sold as individual classes.

Week 1: Grow a Better Cutting Garden

Thursday, July 9 / Sunday, July 12

It is not too late to plant.

We'll look at what you can sow right now for fall color, including sunflowers that bloom in about sixty days, and how to keep a garden producing through succession sowing. We'll cover annuals, perennials, native plants, herbs, and foliage that earn their place in a home garden of any size, plus a short primer on conditioning so your very first bouquet lasts ten days instead of three.

Take home:

  • A seasonal bouquet

  • Seedlings to plant at home, including sunflowers, zinnias, and basil

  • A recommended plant list and growing guide

Week 2: Harvest, Condition, and Care

Thursday, July 16 / Sunday, July 19

The difference between flowers lasting three days and ten days usually comes down to how they are cut and handled.

Working at the bench with material harvested that morning, we'll cover harvesting, conditioning, storing, and caring for cut flowers at home. You'll learn simple techniques that improve vase life and help flowers look their best from the moment they are cut.

Take home:

  • A hand-tied bouquet

  • A flower care reference guide

Week 3: The Secret Ingredients

Thursday, July 23 / Sunday, July 26

Beautiful arrangements are not built from flowers alone.

Foliage, herbs, grasses, seedpods, and unexpected garden materials create movement, texture, fragrance, and personality. Working with seasonal material from the farm, we'll explore how these supporting ingredients transform an arrangement and learn how to gather and use them from both gardens and landscapes.

Take home:

  • A garden-inspired arrangement

  • A recommended list of foliage, herbs, grasses, and specialty materials for cutting gardens

Week 4: Design from the Garden

Thursday, July 30 / Sunday, August 2

Everything comes together.

Using seasonal flowers and foliage, including dahlias as they come into their best, you'll create an arrangement that feels natural, balanced, and expressive. Building on the skills from previous sessions, you'll work with greater independence while learning techniques for shape, proportion, and movement.

Take home:

  • A centerpiece arrangement
